St. Mary's School Marathon, Wisconsin, Excellence in Education, Home of the Eagles

Theresa Borchardt

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with minors in Mathematics Education and Psychology from UW-Stevens Point in 2007.  After graduating I worked as a substitute teacher for the D. C. Everest School District and the Unified School District of Antigo.  Before teaching at St. Mary's I taught eighth grade science as a long-term substitute in Antigo.  I live in Kronenwetter with my husband Dan (who is a graduate of St. Mary's), our daughters, Raelyn and Ansley, our son, Connor.  Besides working at St. Mary's I am also an adjunct faculty member of Northcentral Technical College where I work in the College Prep Center helping students to earn their GED or HSED. Growing up in Wausau and attending the Newman Catholic Schools I am proud to be teaching at St. Mary's and continuing the high standards and faith based learning that Catholic Schools provide.

I am a St. Mary’s and Marathon High School graduate.  I taught at St. John’s Catholic School in Edgar for 17 years.  I am the Social Studies teacher for grades 6, 7, and 8.  I know students learn in different ways, so there are activities and projects going on in the classroom…look for pictures of some of them on the website!  In my free time I like to talk about football and do things with my husband and two small children.

Susan Jacobson Spanish

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Susan Jacobson, a 1976 graduate of McDonell Catholic High School in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin and a 1980 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. I graduated from UWEC with a major in elementary education and a minor in Spanish. My husband Dan and I have three grown sons and six grandchildren. We now live in Wausau. Prior to teaching at St. Mary's in Marathon, I taught fourteen years at the middle school level and fifteen years in fourth grade all within the Chippewa Area Catholic Schools. I am very excited to teach in a 4K through 8th grade parish school. The community of Marathon is truly blessed to have such a strong, vibrant Catholic school where the students can learn daily about the teachings of Jesus and the love of God for them. The love of learning led me into teaching, and I hope to bring that love of learning to my students. We all strive to do our best and let God take care of the rest!

Linda Popowski Seventh Grade

Hello! My name is Audrey Hilts and I am ecstatic to return to St. Mary’s to teach science. I grew up on a beef farm outside of Marathon where my love for science was fostered through romping around the forests and fields with my sister, looking at rocks, trees, and everything in between. I attended St. Mary’s where – despite being a challenging child to teach – the teachers never gave up on me. I look forward to carrying on their example in my own classroom!

After attending Marathon High School, I went on to UW Madison, where I studied English and Zoology and enjoyed working in the Zoology and Geology museums on campus. I remained for a fifth year to earn my Masters in Secondary Science Education and ESL. While in Madison I was blessed to be a part of the St. Paul’s community and look forward to pursuing the Truth with students in the science classroom: how to see the Creator in creation and wonder with awe at the phenomena all around us.

I am thrilled to once again be part of this vibrant community!

Luke Jacobson 8th Grade, Physical Education, & Athletic Director

Hi, my name is Paige Wirkus. While teaching here at St. Mary's, I am going to have a variety of roles, which include 7/8th grade homeroom, 8th grade spelling and religion, and 4th - 8th grade Phy. Ed. teacher, along with being a math specialist for all grades. After graduating from Marathon High School, I continued my education at UW-Marathon County and later received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Mathematics Education at UW-Stevens Point. So far in my teaching career I have been a long term substitute and 2nd grade teacher for the D.C. Everest School District, and a long term substitute for Marathon Area Elementary School and St. Mary's School.

I currently live in Marathon with my family. I am the oldest of four children. I have two sisters, Brianna and Morgan, and one brother, Preston. Since we are a very "sporty" family, most of our time is spent cheering on each other and the Marathon Red Raiders or playing a variety of sports, especially volleyball. I also enjoy reading books, painting, and playing with our dogs, Grizzly and Dexter.

I am really looking forward to returning to the school I attended and working with students of all ages! Math has always been a fun subject for me to learn and teach because of the many everyday life applications. As for Phy. Ed., I am very passionate about fitness and want to help others develop a sense of wellness that they will utilize throughout their life! St. Mary's helped shape me into the person I am today, and I hope that by exhibiting core Catholic values I am able to have the same positive impact on my students that my teachers had on me.
